I shot this 10-point white-tailed buck south of High Prairie, Alberta in October 2011. It was early morning, just before sunrise and I glassed the field. I saw this deer stand up beside a bale of hay and tried to determine if it was a doe or buck. When I saw it had points on its head, I set up for a shot on its spine with my .300 win mag. I took the shot and then set up for another. However, it wasn't standing there and I didn't see where it had gone. The scenarios I thought of were, either I shot and missed and it ran off, or I injured and it ran off and I wouldn't see it again. So, I started walking out to where it was standing, hoping to find the blood trail. But as I started walking towards the site, I looked down the field and saw that it had gone down about a hundred yards from where I shot it. As I got up to it, I saw that it had a five-by-five rack on its head! I couldn't believe it! I was ecstatic! I thought it may have been a six- or eight-pointer. I would have been happy with that, I just wanted fill my tag. But to see that it was a five-by-five, that was awesome! I was not expecting to see one there bedded down, but I was in the right place at the right time to shoot him. Although I was aiming for the spine, I got him high in the shoulders, so he didn't go very far and he died quickly. That's the way I wanted it! What an awesome hunt it was! So, I'm getting the taxidermy work done now, I should have it back by next February.
