When i hunt small game i tend to just shoot anything that is in season so in general including raccoons, rabbit, squirrels, and birds so what would be the ideal gun for this?
410 is my favorite gun to use to go small game hunting. Depends on where you live though. I can't hunt with a 22cal. where I live. I do use a 22cal. when going up state Pa.
You don't want to shoot that small of a round in the air. .22 can travel miles and kill someone. 410 or 20 gauge would be best if you are going to be shooting up at anything.
It all depends on the conditions and game. Rabbits in brush a 410 or 20 gauge would be best. Treed squirrels I would recommend a 20 gauge especially for a little longer shot that a 410 may not quite suffice.Any time you are using a rifle I would not advise taking a shot at an animal in a tree or on top of an hill or bank where you don't know where your round will end up. 22, 22-250, and 223 are great rounds for groundhog, rabbit, coons and other small animals even coyotes. 17 hmr is a great round for any small animal. A rifle is best for sitting game in an open environment. I hope this helps and enjoy some great hunting adventures.
