For small game I would say (of coarse) a 22 or a 410. Myself, I started out w/ a 22 single shot that I put together myself and borrowed My gramps 20 GA. bolt or 16 GA. double until I had the money and bought a used 20 GA. H&R single. FOR big game I think to start out with a 243 0r 7MM 08 is hard to beat the newer 20 GA. slug guns are pretty good to. 30/30 CAL. is also a good one small and simple to operate with the power to put down just about anything you'll come across in the north eastern part of the state where I'm from.
I suppose it depends where you are located and what game you will be hunting. I would say .270 or .30 06 - obviously pick the caliber which will be able to be used universally for the most seasons. Also cost wise, both of those offer cheaper ammo and is simple to find.
I have seen many on here, but it depends on what you hunt. A 12 gauge that can shoot slugs Is great b/c you can use it for anything, but it lacks range even with slugs. A 30-30 and .35 or any lever action bullet such as those just jobs the bullet, I would not suggest them. A .22 is the perfect starter gun, but you can't hunt much with it. A .270, .308, 7mm-08 or 30-06 is going to be the best for all around. They have range knock down power and you can hunt anything but birds and small game with them. A .243 has little knock down power. A .300 is great but isn't great to start with. For a first I would suggest a .308 b/c there isn't much kick, you have range, and you can kill whatever needs to be killed.
My first was a Remington 788 in .308. Still have it, sort of, I passed it down to my 14 year old daughter who wants to start hunting with me. She is a great shot with a .22 pistol at the range.
