In my experience, the larger and thicker the rack and the neck, the older the deer is. An eight point can still be a young deer; if the base of the rack isn't an inch or bigger in diameter, it's still a young buck. It's also in the musculature; the thicker the neck and shoulders, the stronger the buck, which typically means they're older. If the ears and back are starting to sag and they nod their head when grazing, we take them down, cause that deer could be at least seven or eight.
The best way to judge age is body structure and posture, for both bucks and does. Audra was pretty much spot on when it comes to bucks. As for does, look for large body size and a long face. Older does also tend to be much more cautious and deliberate, and will show that in their body language.
