Mother Earth News has the most complete article I've seen on tanning hides.none of your business
First you got to make sure you've scraped all the fat off. Then you need to salt the flesh side and make sure you work it in good. Then fold it flesh on flesh, roll it up and leave it for 24 hours. After the 24 hours scrape off the old salt and salt it again with clean salt and leave it for another 24 hours. Then make a salt bath by mixing 1/2 pound of salt per gallon of hot water, mix it up good, then let it cool. Then soak your hide for about 8 or 10 hours. After that take it out and rinse it off. Then you want to make sure the skin is thinned as much as possible. After you thin it wash it in water with dish soap to remove all grease and salt. Thats where the tanning lotion comes in. Each brand has its own instructions and methods, some brands might say to not even do any of this. But trapper's Hide tanning formula is what I use. It gives you a very complete set of instructions and it works well.kylene donovan
