Just outside of Cody, WY when I was about 13 I went out with my little brother, Dad and a few of his friends. It was just about freezing temperatures outside and after my brother fell in the water (first time in hip waders) I gave him my gloves. He fell in again about 5 minutes later, taking his gun with him. I couldn't help with the gloves but I gave him my 20 ga and went to the blind with my Dad's friend George. George was nice enough to let me shoot at the first duck we saw, with his gun at that, but somehow forgot to mention that he favored a 10 ga. I hadn't yet (or since) shot a 10 ga, but after following that duck getting ready to pull the trigger I was already half twisted around and when I puled that trigger it spun me like a top and about sent me into the water as well.
That had to be something to see, My first time shooting a 10 ga. was when I was 8 and I did a back flip over the log I was sitting on, straight into the water!
My father shot a wood duck and it got hung up in the weeds in a beaver pond. Our black lab swam out to sniff it a couple of times but wouldn't retrieve. Dad, a trapper and outdoorsman stated "I don't leave anything I've shot in the field....Son swim out and get it". Even at 10 the water in Canada in late October was freezing but I did get that duck!
My best duck hunting story has to be my first group duck hunt. Where I grew up in Eastern Montana there isn't any water which in turn makes it an unfavorable duck habitat so I was around 20 and had been out a couple times by myself (just to save embarasment) but never managed to land a duck. So I was with three other people and it seemed like we waited for days in silence until the first ducks flew overhead; I raised my gun and shot Holy S**t I actually got one! My heart started to race and a huge grin spread across my face-but rather than shoot again I stood up grasped my shotgun with both hands held it over my head and let out a great big wooooohoooo! Needless to say ducks flared every which direction and we didn't see another group that whole evening.
For some strange reason those guys have never asked me to acompany them again; but I didn't really care;in my mind it was the best duck hunt ever. Every fall since- there I am chasing that same high-that excitement and pride I felt as that first bird spiraled to the ground on that beautiful fall day!. I think the only thing that will bring me back to that first triumphant feeling will be when I see my boy drop his first duck this fall. :)
My best duck story would have to be a time i took a fellow soldier to my grandfathers for christmas a few years ago while i was stationed at fort polk, LA. We got to the house after a 2 hour drive which wasnt bad at all. My cousins were talking about duck hunting that next morning and wanted me to go with them. they all started laughing when i told them he was going with us ( didnt feel right inviting a buddy and then just leaving him and the house.) so we went to the Bass Pro Shops a few hours away to "outfit" my buddy, got him some waders and cloths and shells. I let him borrow a older 12 gauge that i had at the house. the next morning we get in the truck and head to the duck blind. we start working some birds as the sun was coming up, just one of those perfect mornings. As the first flock came in we told him to stare what his boots and not look up till we tell him to. As the birds were ready we told him now... he jumps up and shoots 5 of the 9 ducks. He was the limited out by the 3rd flock. I was happy that he had a great sucessful first duck hunt, but my cousin would to this day not let him back in that duck blind. :)
well just reacently we were hunting near a lake and to get to our blind we had to take the boat out to the blind. after our hunt (we came back with nothing ). we had to take the boat to get back to the boat lauch, well when we started the engine (1950 johnson ) it broke down. so we had to get out of the island and get to the launch before dark .. well we didnt have any ores .. so we stuck our shotguns in their cases and used the guns as ores to get to the launch .while my brother was paddling along with my father i was using a stobe light sending out s.o.s to the other people fishing along while shooting my shot gun in the air to get attention to our boat . so we did that and no one answered ecspecially a boat about 50 yards away from us ... YUPPIES... all they cared about was their darn late night boat ride . so about three hours latter (11:30) is when we came into shallow water and me and my father dragged the boat through three ft water to get 1 mile to the boat launch ( 12:00 midnight) is when we got to the boat lauch and made it home
