I'm not exactly sure where Alexandria is but I'm from Appomattox Va. and I and my son had a great time in the Blue ridge mountains in the George Washington national forest around Amherst county. We camped on the same ridge every year from 3 to 6 days and Most of the time it was like we had the whole place to ourselves for days and saw a lot of deer! If you hunt private land you'll have to deal w/ every body and their brother running deer dogs. That some times can work to your advantage if your good at running shots but if you want one on one deer hunting head for the hills, Deer dogs aren't aloud there. GOOD LUCK
Alleghany and Craig County have good national forests with some great hunts. As Appomattox is just about 2 hours east of myself (Alleghany Co.) . The blue ridge mountain range offers good hunting bear , deer , or raccoon if you like .
