Elk Hunting in VA

I am moving to VA and I found out that there is elk in VA. Does any one know any thing about how to go about hunting them? The VA dnr page is less than helpful with anything regarding elk.

I lived in Va and I would almost bet that its a draw for the tag to get a elk. I know they transplanted to Va a little while ago. What part of Va did you move too?

They transplanted them here in PA, and it's a very limited draw. They only gave out 19 bull tags and 46 cow tags this year. Not very good odds of drawing one either when hundreds of thousands of people put in. I would have to assume VA is the same way.

What Douglas said is true, If they cross the line you just use your regular ol deer tag. I have spent alot of time in the Blue ridge mountains and I haven't ever seen or heard one. But some people say if you stick to the south part of the state somewhere down around the Tennessee border the slight chance is there.

I found the information you were looking for. VA has no elk season currently. 75 elk were released, and when the numbers are sufficient, a season will begin. Everything that has been said about using a deer tag on either sex is true. Closed to hunting in particular counties where they were released. If they wander, free game, but must be checked in.

Not sure but if I remember right they let some go in Wisconsin at one time too. I remember that some lady had shot one and she said she thought it was a white tail LOL but this has been years now.

If you want Elk in Virginia you'll have to go to south west Virginia. Right now they are trying to grow the herd so some areas are off limits to hunting. But if you catch one coming in form KY its free game or outside the protected areas. Not sure exactly where they are at. You can hunt at George Washington national Forest but check their website first.

I think it may be very convenient. You can easily compare prices in different countries and find your dream hunting. Your opinion is highly needed!
